Frequently Asked Questions

Generator Installation — common questions answered

What size generator do I need for my home?
Size depends on what you want to power. A 7,500-watt generator covers essentials (lights, refrigerator, a window AC). A 20kW+ standby generator can power your entire home including central AC. We assess your needs and recommend the right size.
What is the difference between a standby and portable generator?
A standby generator is permanently installed outside your home, runs on natural gas or propane, and turns on automatically during outages. A portable generator is moved into place, runs on gasoline, and must be started manually.
How long does generator installation take?
A standby generator installation typically takes 1–2 days including the transfer switch and electrical connections. Permitting may add a few days for the inspection.
Is a permit required for generator installation?
Yes. Generator installations require an electrical permit. We handle all permitting and inspections as part of the installation process.
How often does a standby generator need maintenance?
Generac and most other standby generators recommend annual service including oil change, spark plug inspection, battery test, and exercise cycle verification. We offer annual maintenance plans.
Can I run my generator during a power outage without a transfer switch?
Not safely. Running a generator without a proper transfer switch risks backfeed — which can electrocute utility workers restoring power. A transfer switch or interlock kit is required by code and is a non-negotiable safety measure.
